How to Choose the Right Head Unit: Vehicle-Specific vs 2DIN / 1DIN Universal
When upgrading your car stereo, one of the most common questions is: should you choose a vehicle-specific head unit or a 2DIN / 1DIN universal head unit?
Each type has its own advantages in terms of installation, compatibility, screen size, and feature retention. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key differences to help you make the right choice for your vehicle.
1. Vehicle-Specific Head Units: Seamless Fit and Easy Installation
If your vehicle’s model year and dashboard design match the requirements, a vehicle-specific head unit is usually the best option.
Key advantages include:
- Plug-and-play installation with no additional dash kit required
- Perfect fit with your factory dashboard, maintaining a clean, OEM-style appearance
- Clear feature support — retained functions such as factory amplifier, backup camera, or steering wheel controls are listed on the product page
Compatible model years and dashboard designs are typically shown on the product page, so it’s important to review them before purchasing.
2. 2DIN / 1DIN Universal Head Units: Flexible but Requires More Planning
If a vehicle-specific unit is not compatible with your car, a 2DIN or 1DIN universal head unit is the alternative.
Universal units are more flexible, but installation conditions may vary depending on your vehicle setup.
3. Understanding DIN Sizes and Installation Basics
Before choosing a universal head unit, it’s important to understand the standard DIN sizes:
- 2DIN head unit: approximately 178 × 100 mm
- 1DIN head unit: approximately 178 × 50 mm
However, actual products may vary slightly due to screen designs:
- 10.1-inch 2DIN units: standard 2DIN chassis with a floating display
- 7-inch 2DIN units: include a removable frame, typically fitting dashboards around 170–178 mm (width) and 96–100 mm (height)
This means you should not rely on DIN size alone — always compare with your dashboard’s actual available space.

4. When No Installation Kit Is Needed
In some cases, you can install a universal head unit directly:
- Your vehicle already has an aftermarket 2DIN / 1DIN unit installed
- Your factory head unit already matches 2DIN / 1DIN size (less common)
However, please note:
- saiho universal head units use ISO standard connectors
- If your vehicle does not use ISO connectors, an ISO wiring harness will be required
Note: does not sell installation kits or ISO harnesses. These need to be purchased separately.
5. When an Installation Kit Is Required
If your dashboard does not support direct installation, you will need a dash kit:
- You can search for and purchase a compatible installation kit yourself
- You may also provide your vehicle model, year, dashboard photos, and requirements to saiho— we can help suggest suitable kits as a reference
Note: Final compatibility should always be confirmed with the installation kit seller
6. Screen Size and Installation Style
Universal head units come in different screen sizes and structures, which affect both installation and user experience.
Before purchasing, check the product page for detailed dimensions and confirm that your dashboard has enough space. This helps avoid interference with air vents, buttons, or other controls.
2 DIN Universal Units
- 10.1-inch: floating display design, adjustable viewing angle
- 7-inch: fixed, embedded installation, flush with the dashboard
1 DIN Universal Units
- 10.95-inch: floating display, adjustable angle
- 6.36-inch: embedded installation, fixed screen position
Choose based on your dashboard space and whether you prefer an adjustable display.
7. Considerations for Previously Modified Vehicles
If your vehicle has already been modified, additional checks are necessary:
Previously installed universal unit → switching to vehicle-specific unit
- Confirm compatibility based on model year and dashboard design
- Check whether the original wiring has been modified or cut
Previously installed vehicle-specific unit → replacing with a new unit
- Reconfirm compatibility
- If compatible, a vehicle-specific unit is still recommended
- If not, consider a 2DIN / 1DIN universal unit
Recommended selection order:
Vehicle-specific → 2DIN / 1DIN universal → Portable head unit
8. What If None of These Options Fit?
If neither a vehicle-specific nor a universal head unit can be installed, a portable head unit can be a practical alternative.
Portable units do not require fixed dashboard installation and offer greater flexibility, making them suitable for certain vehicles or installation constraints.
